Please share this excellent and unforgettable opportunity for local students on the trip of a lifetime!

In March of 2025, 60 Waterloo Region students and seven chaperones embarked on an EF (Education First) Battlefields Tour community trip. The trip was designed for students ages 15 – 17 to learn more about Canadian History and specifically the sacrifice Canadians have made over the past 120 years to help guarantee the freedoms our country enjoys today. They visited Berlin, Amsterdam, Ypres, Juno Beach, Vimy Ridge and Paris. They toured for 10 days, visiting cemeteries, memorials, former battlefields, museums and even a concentration camp from WWII. Branch #530 Waterloo recently hosted a Tour Recap event, where the students and chaperones who were on this trip, shared their experiences with us. The students located grave markers for soldiers from Waterloo Region who lost their lives in battle and were buried overseas. They were moved by “learning firsthand by being there” and that they “gained respect for the places and the veterans that were there before me”. These are powerful statements made by the students.

The Legion is committed to ensuring the tradition of Remembrance remains relevant to and supported by younger generations. We promote youth-specific education regarding Veterans and Remembrance through a range of local and national initiatives. Education First tours fit very well with these Legion commitments. For nearly four decades, EF Educational Tours has helped thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of Canadian students share life-changing educational travel experiences. In that time, they’ve developed relationships with local experts and organizations in each country they design tours for, ensuring that they can deliver both authentic cultural experiences and a safe, hands-on learning environment that empowers students to evolve.

Arden Court (who is also one of our members), is a passionate teacher who feels that it is vital for students to learn about our past and to try not to repeat the same mistakes and along with EF Tours, spearheaded this opportunity. The trip was so successful, Arden, EF Tours and the Waterloo Legion are working together again on the next opportunity to take place in August 2027.
